Description
Mr & Mrs Warn ran the successful aquaculture business until their retirement in the 1960’s. The company then changed hands a few times over the next 2 decades until purchased by Merimbula locals Hugh & Debbie Wheeler in 1982.
Hugh and Debbie took the business to the next level adding a fresh seafood shop, offering oyster tours and then expanding into “The Kiosk” – selling delicious fresh oysters prepared a variety of ways as well as fresh fish, prawns and other seafood dishes to enjoy as take-away or at the small outdoor dining area.
The Kiosk proved to be popular with tourists & locals alike and they outgrew the original smaller premises, still located on the property. Plans began to be drawn up and the magnificent new restaurant & shop came to fruition in 2003. The building features recycled bridge timbers & local stonework and offers both indoor & outdoor dining on the expansive timber decking plus a separate take-away dining area and shop.
Demand for Wheelers Oysters continues to grow, so Hugh & Debbie are now concentrating on farming full-time and the restaurant is owned & managed by Jacqui Smith, still serving the same quality & freshness that has built the business to what it is today.
Wheeler’s is a fully accessible venue. Enter through the primary carpark and continue driving around the back, and you will find disabled parking which is connected to a short path that leads you through a gate to the restaurant. If you are arriving with a large group or several vehicles, please contact the venue for further assistance.
